Description

The 2023 (D) American Innovation Dollar - Mississippi, Position A is a dollar from the Denver Mint, belonging to the American Innovation Dollars 2018 to Date series. The U.S. Mint's figure of 383,600 covers every Denver Mississippi dollar, whatever the orientation of its edge lettering; how many have the Position A edge is not recorded. The obverse features a profile of the Statue of Liberty with a small stylized gear privy mark, and the reverses honor innovations and innovators from each state, the District of Columbia and the U.S. territories. This coin honors the first human lung transplant performed by Dr. James D. Hardy and his team at the University of Mississippi Medical Center on June 11, 1963. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906. Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.49 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #916319.
