Description

The 2023 (S) Proof Jovita Idar Silver Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the American Women Quarters (2022 - 2025) series. The San Francisco Mint struck 279,366 silver proof Jovita Idar quarters dated 2023. The obverse features George Washington facing right in a new dynamic portrait by Laura Gardin Fraser (modeled in 1931 and first used on a quarter in 2022) and the reverse displays unique designs honoring prominent American women who shaped the nation's history. The reverse shows Jovita Idar with her hands clasped, her figure filled with words naming her work and the newspapers she wrote for: MEXICAN AMERICAN RIGHTS, TEACHER, JOVITA IDAR, NURSE, EVOLUCIÓN, ASTREA, EL HERALDO CRISTIANO, LA CRUZ BLANCA, JOURNALIST, LA CRÓNICA, EL PROGRESO and LA LIGA FEMENIL MEXICANISTA. The other inscriptions are QUARTER DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Texas-born journalist, teacher, and civil rights activist who advocated for Mexican Americans and founded the White Cross, providing aid during the Mexican Revolution. Bessie Coleman, Edith Kanaka'ole, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jovita Idar, and Maria Tallchief honored. Coleman was the first African American and Native American woman to hold a pilot's license. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $28 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 99.9% silver, weighing 6.34 grams, 24.26 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #919340.
