Description

The 2023 (D) Bessie Coleman Quarter is a quarter produced at the Denver Mint as part of the American Women Quarters (2022 - 2025) series. The U.S. Mint produced 317.2 million examples, making this ranked 13th of 15 mint variants by mintage, with 12% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing right in a new dynamic portrait by Laura Gardin Fraser (her original 1931 design, finally adopted 90 years later) and the reverse displays unique designs honoring prominent American women who shaped the nation's history. First African American and first Native American woman to earn a pilot's license, received in France on June 15, 1921. The reverse depicts Coleman suiting up for a flight. Bessie Coleman, Edith Kanaka'ole, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jovita Idar, and Maria Tallchief honored. Coleman was the first African American and Native American woman to hold a pilot's license. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $1 depending on grade and condition. Struck in copper-nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #916706.
