Description

The 2023 (D) Jovita Idar Quarter was struck at the Denver Mint as a quarter in the American Women Quarters (2022 - 2025) series. The Denver Mint struck 188,000,000 Jovita Idar quarters dated 2023. The obverse features George Washington facing right in a new dynamic portrait by Laura Gardin Fraser (modeled in 1931 and first used on a quarter in 2022) and the reverse displays unique designs honoring prominent American women who shaped the nation's history. The reverse shows Jovita Idar with her hands clasped, her figure filled with words naming her work and the newspapers she wrote for: MEXICAN AMERICAN RIGHTS, TEACHER, JOVITA IDAR, NURSE, EVOLUCIÓN, ASTREA, EL HERALDO CRISTIANO, LA CRUZ BLANCA, JOURNALIST, LA CRÓNICA, EL PROGRESO and LA LIGA FEMENIL MEXICANISTA. The other inscriptions are QUARTER DOLLAR, E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Texas-born journalist, teacher, and civil rights activist who advocated for Mexican Americans and founded the White Cross, providing aid during the Mexican Revolution. Bessie Coleman, Edith Kanaka'ole, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jovita Idar, and Maria Tallchief honored. Coleman was the first African American and Native American woman to hold a pilot's license. Coined at Denver's facility, which transitioned from processing Colorado gold rush metal to full-scale coin production in 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $1 depending on grade and condition. Struck in copper-nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.26 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #919369.
