Description

The second working hub obverse variety documented for the 2023-P Edith Kanaka'ole Quarter, WWHO-002 presents a dual-area doubling pattern with contrasting intensities: slight doubling to the northeast on the eyelid and strong doubling to the north in the lower hair. This intensity disparity — slight on one feature, strong on another — indicates the hub misalignment direction and magnitude aligned more favorably with the hair detail's geometry than with the eyelid's contour, producing dramatically different visible results on two features separated by only a small distance on the die face. As part of the American Women Quarters program (2022-2025), the Edith Kanaka'ole design honors the Hawaiian educator, kumu hula, and cultural practitioner. WWHO-002 is notable beyond this single design because the same working hub was used to produce working dies for both the Kanaka'ole and Roosevelt quarter obverses in 2023, meaning this variety may also appear on other 2023 quarter designs that share the common obverse hub. This cross-design hub sharing is a consequence of the Mint's production process, where a single obverse working hub serves multiple reverse designs within the same program year. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition, this quarter's strong hair doubling is the primary pickup point — visible under modest magnification — while the slight eyelid doubling requires more careful examination to confirm.

Attribution History

  • None known Comments: WWHO-002 is known on 2023-P Kanaka'ole and Roosevelt quarters. It appears to be from a working hub that was used to produce working dies for both designs. Due to this, it may also be found on other 2023 quarter designs.
