Description

Exhibiting medium-strength spread directed northward on central banner stripes #9 and #11 of the Union Shield reverse, VDDR-002 on the 2023-D Lincoln Shield Cent documents a hub doubling event that affected specific elements of Lyndall Bass's reverse design introduced in 2010. The Union Shield's thirteen vertical stripes — representing the original colonies — and horizontal banner displaying the motto ONE CENT provide closely spaced parallel lines that are diagnostically sensitive to hub displacement. Medium spread on stripes #9 and #11 (counting from left to right) indicates the hub offset vector aligned with those particular stripe positions to produce visible displacement, while adjacent stripes may have fallen below the detection threshold depending on the displacement geometry. Die marker documentation records three stages: Stage A in early die state (EDS, unconfirmed); Stage B at mid-die state (MDS) with a die crack visible on the upper left shield edge and the obverse also showing MDS characteristics; and Stage C at MDS (unconfirmed). The Stage B die crack on the upper left shield edge provides an independent attribution marker beyond the doubling itself — a crack that developed during the die's service life and progressively lengthened as the die continued striking coins. The VarietyVista UVC and DMR designations remain unassigned (listed as "????"), indicating this variety may have been documented before formal tracking numbers were allocated. Struck at the Denver Mint in copper-plated zinc composition (2.5 grams, 19 mm diameter), this 2023 Lincoln cent carries the shield reverse that has served the denomination since 2010. The northward spread on the numbered stripes is best confirmed under 10x magnification by comparing stripe widths at the affected positions against adjacent normal stripes.
