RCD-1c-2021-02 Retained Cud

Description

RCD-1c-2021-02 on the 2021 (P) Lincoln Shield Cent is a retained cud catalogued by Cuds on Coins on 08/20/2022, discovered by Dave Benson and Kevin Brown. A retained cud differs from a standard cud in that the broken die piece remains in place rather than falling away: the fractured section continues to strike coins, producing a raised, flat-topped area on the coin corresponding to the retained fragment's position. This example also exhibits reverse die trails — parallel raised ridges extending away from the corners of letters, numbers, or design elements on the reverse, caused by metal movement at the die surface due to die wear or die polishing. The "white arrows" notation in the catalogue record identifies the specific trail locations on the reverse. The 2021 Lincoln Shield cent was struck at Philadelphia in copper-plated zinc. Retained cuds documenting simultaneous cud and die-trail phenomena on the same die are relatively uncommon in the Cuds on Coins catalogue.
