Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista as VDDR-003, this 2021-D Lincoln Shield cent doubled die reverse exhibits a medium spread to the north on central banner stripes 5, 7, and 9 of the Union shield design. The copper-plated zinc cent weighs 2.5 grams and measures 19 mm in diameter, struck at the Denver Mint. Tracked with pending Universal Variety Code (UVC-????) and Die Marker Reference (DMR-00?) assignments, the variety progresses through three documented die states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid die state featuring a die crack running southwest from the O of ONE and a die crack developing in the upper hair of Lincoln's portrait, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The northward spread on the odd-numbered central banner stripes (5, 7, and 9) creates a distinctive pattern where every other stripe shows displacement, a consequence of the striped design's alternating raised and recessed areas interacting with the hub doubling direction. The die cracks at Stage B affect both sides of the coin: the reverse crack from ONE and the obverse crack in the hair, indicating bilateral die deterioration. Lyndall Bass designed the Lincoln Shield reverse introduced in 2010, featuring thirteen vertical stripes representing the original states topped by a horizontal scroll bearing E PLURIBUS UNUM. The 2021-D Denver Mint cent production continued the Shield design's tradition of generating new doubled die discoveries, as the geometric precision of the shield's stripes provides ideal reference lines for detecting even subtle hub displacement. This variety belongs to the Lincoln Shield Cents 2010 to Date series, and the medium spread classification suggests the doubling is visible under moderate magnification.
