Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as the second doubled die reverse for the 2021 Denver Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, this variety presents a medium spread in the north direction visible on central banner stripes 5, 7, 9, and 11 of the Union Shield reverse. The Shield reverse, introduced in 2010 and designed by Lyndall Bass, features thirteen vertical stripes beneath a horizontal banner inscribed E PLURIBUS UNUM, and doubled die varieties on these stripes produce measurably offset duplicate lines that can be detected under moderate magnification. Die marker codes UVC-???? and DMR-00? indicate that the Universal Variety Code and Die Marker Reference numbers had not been finalized at the time of cataloging. Three die states have been tentatively identified: Stage A showing Early Die State characteristics on both obverse and reverse, with Stage B at Mid Die State and Stage C at Late Die State both listed as unconfirmed. Tracking die states allows researchers to establish whether the doubling becomes more or less visible as the die wears through its production life — early die state coins typically show the sharpest doubling before wear softens the displaced detail. The 2021-D cent was struck at the Denver Mint during an era of continued high-volume cent production despite ongoing debate about the denomination's economic viability.
