2020-W VT WWHR-001 is a Wexler working hub listing for the 2020-W Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park quarter (Vermont) in the America the Beautiful series. Wexler stresses that it is not a doubled die and not a strike-through: between the two lowest branches on the tree's right side there is a sunken, branch-shaped mark left by a problem in the working hub. It looks a lot like the genuine doubled dies of this design, Wexler notes, except that the mark is sunk into the surface (incuse) where real doubling is raised. The present view is that a clogged master die caused it, since the lower branch often lacks detail on these coins: when a working hub was made from that master die, some of the debris came loose and was pressed into the hub, leaving the branch-shaped mark. Small differences in the mark may come from wear on the hub or on dies made from it, or several working hubs from the clogged master die may have taken in the same debris. That hub, or at least one carrying the same debris, was also used for Philadelphia working dies. Markers on both sides vary from one affected working die to another. George W. • None known Comments: This appears much like true doubled dies known for this design except that this mark is incuse while true doubling is raised. The current belief is that this was caused by a clogged master die as missing detail on the lower branch is a common issue on these coins. While creating a working hub using this master die, some of this debris became dislodged and was pressed into the working hub, leaving this branch-shaped mark on the hub. Slight variance in the appearance of this mark may be due to wear on the hub or the dies created from it, though it is also possible that multiple working hubs created from the clogged master die were hubbed in this debris.
