Description
The 2020 Andrew Jackson "1829" silver matte finish medal honors the seventh President of the United States in the Presidential Silver Medal Program. Jackson's 1829 inauguration represented a seismic shift in American politics — the first president from west of the Appalachian Mountains, the first without a college education, and the champion of a new democratic movement that extended political participation to the common white man. His raucous inaugural celebration, during which thousands of supporters stormed the White House, symbolized the democratization of American politics. Jackson served two terms through 1837, a presidency defined by his fierce personality and willingness to wield executive power. He vetoed the recharter of the Second Bank of the United States in a battle with Nicholas Biddle that reshaped American finance, forced South Carolina to back down during the Nullification Crisis by threatening military force, signed the Indian Removal Act that led to the Trail of Tears, and survived the first assassination attempt on a sitting president when Richard Lawrence's two pistols both misfired at point-blank range. Andrew Jackson (1767-1845) was a self-made frontier lawyer, plantation owner, and military hero whose victory at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 made him a national icon. The .999 fine silver matte finish medal captures the intense, angular features and wild white hair that made Jackson one of the most visually distinctive American presidents, a man whose force of personality earned him the nickname "Old Hickory."
