Coin Details
Description
The Chester A. Arthur Presidential Silver Medal features the twenty-first president on a one-ounce .999 fine silver medal with matte finish. Arthur's obverse portrait was designed by Charles E. Barber, reproducing the historic bronze presidential medal. The reverse displays John Reich's "Peace and Friendship" clasped hands design. Arthur assumed the presidency on September 20, 1881, following Garfield's death, having served as Vice President for less than seven months. Despite his background in machine politics as a protege of New York Senator Roscoe Conkling, Arthur surprised the nation by championing the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act of 1883, establishing merit-based government employment. He served until March 1885 and did not receive his party's nomination for a second term. This silver medal was released in August 2024 at $90.
