(2023) Presidential Silver Medal - James Buchanan
Strike Type
Coin Details
Description
The James Buchanan Presidential Silver Medal continues the U.S. Mint's series of one-ounce .999 fine silver medals honoring American presidents. Buchanan's obverse reproduces the historic bronze presidential medal portrait of the fifteenth president, the only president who never married, with Harriet Lane serving as White House hostess. The reverse features John Reich's "Peace and Friendship" design. Buchanan's presidency (1857-1861) encompassed the final years before the Civil War, as the nation fractured over slavery following the Dred Scott decision and John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry. His inability to prevent secession has led historians to consistently rank him among the least effective presidents. This silver medal was released in February 2023 with a matte finish, continuing the series' tradition of pairing presidential portraits with the symbolic clasped hands reverse.
