2020 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-035
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2020-P WDDR-035, this Jefferson Nickel from the Return to Monticello series exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling, showing a portion of the left side of the large triangle and the top of the second column within the center door above the steps of the Monticello building. Class VIII doubling results from the working hub being tilted at an angle relative to the working die surface during the secondary impression, creating a displacement that varies across the die face depending on each design element's position relative to the tilt axis — in this case, concentrating the visible doubling within the architectural details of Monticello's center entrance area. Obverse die markers include a die gouge close to Jefferson's hair below the right side of the N of IN and a very small die gouge in the field above the E of LIBERTY. Reverse markers feature a small die gouge to the right of the bottom of the second L of MONTICELLO and a small die gouge in the field above the TS of CENTS. The Monticello reverse — restored to the Jefferson Nickel in 2006 after the two-year Westward Journey series hiatus — was redesigned by Felix Schlag's original concept with refinements by Jamie Franki and Donna Weaver. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter, the 2020-P Jefferson Nickel continues the series that began in 1938. The doubling concentrated in the center door area — on the triangle and column architectural elements — demonstrates how tilted hub doubling can produce highly localized effects when the tilt axis passes near certain design features, leaving only those elements at sufficient angular distance from the axis to display measurable displacement.
