Description

WDDR-001 (Wexler Variety ID: 2020-P 25-cent KS WDDR-001), a doubled die reverse on the 2020 Philadelphia-mint Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve Quarter, was documented by the Wexler Team with no additional cross-references known. It represents a documented hub doubling event on the reverse of this Kansas-themed design, from the 2020 design cycle, the last five-design year of the America the Beautiful Quarters program. The Tallgrass Prairie reverse, designed by Emily Damstra and sculpted by Renata Gordon, depicts a regal fritillary butterfly against big bluestem and Indian grasses — a scene rich in organic textures including grass blades and patterned wings that can capture hub displacement as doubled contours in the fine natural detail. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve in the Kansas Flint Hills protects one of the last remaining stretches of intact tallgrass prairie in North America. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-nickel clad planchets at 5.67 grams and 24.26 mm diameter, the 2020-P quarter entered circulation during the COVID-19 pandemic, a period that created unusual production dynamics at the U.S. Mint facilities.
