Description

First in the pre-cud catalog for the 2019 Lincoln Shield Cent, PC-1c-2019-01 was documented by Cuds on Coins on a Philadelphia Mint specimen. A pre-cud preserves the penultimate stage of die rim failure — a crack has advanced to or near the rim but the compromised section has not yet broken free. On the struck coin, the fracture path appears as a raised line where planchet metal was forced into the fissure, mapping the exact trajectory the crack followed through the die steel. Pre-cuds occupy a specific position in the failure progression: they follow simple die cracks in severity and precede retained cuds, where the fractured piece remains lodged, and full cuds, where the fragment separates entirely. The 2019-P cent was produced in copper-plated zinc, the standard composition since 1982, bearing the Shield reverse symbolizing national unity.
