Description

Reported on August 13, 2018, this rim cud was identified on a 2018-P Voyageurs National Park quarter from the America the Beautiful series. A cud error occurs when a piece of the die breaks away at the rim, leaving a raised, featureless blob of metal on the struck coin where the missing die fragment no longer imparts design detail. The location and size of rim cuds vary widely, and each represents a unique die failure event. Voyageurs National Park, located in northern Minnesota along the Canadian border, is depicted on the reverse with a scene of lakes and wilderness that characterize the park's water-based landscape. Cud errors on America the Beautiful quarters are actively collected, as the program's 56 different designs spanning 2010 through 2021 generated a substantial population of die breaks across the various mints and issues. The raised featureless area created by the missing die fragment distinguishes a true cud from lesser rim breaks or die chips, which leave smaller and less dramatic disruptions to the rim detail. Collectors value cuds for their visual impact and the insight they provide into die longevity and failure patterns.
