Description
Second in the documented sequence of 2018 Denver Mint Roosevelt Dime doubled die reverses, WDDR-002 preserves a hub misalignment event from one of Denver's many dime working dies used that year. The Wexler Team assigned this variety the identifier 2018-D 10c WDDR-002, with no known cross-references in other attribution systems (listed as "None known"). The second-position catalog number indicates this was either the second DDR discovered for the 2018-D dime or ranks second in prominence behind WDDR-001, which holds the premier slot. Roosevelt Dime production at Denver continues at high volume each year, with the Mint consuming large quantities of working dies to meet circulation demand — and each die's hubbing sequence carries the possibility of generating a doubled die variety when the hub and die fail to align precisely between impressions. The clad composition Roosevelt Dime (91.67% copper, 8.33% nickel bonded to a copper core) weighs 2.268 grams and measures 17.91mm — the smallest circulating U.S. denomination by diameter, which concentrates Sinnock's reverse design into a compact space where hub doubling affects proportionally more of the visible field. The torch, olive branch, oak branch, and inscriptions ONE DIME, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and E PLURIBUS UNUM are the primary diagnostic zones. Without published die markers, attribution of WDDR-002 requires matching the specific doubling pattern — affected elements, spread direction, and intensity — against the Wexler reference description and differentiating it from WDDR-001. Raking light at a low angle across the reverse under 7x to 10x magnification provides optimal viewing conditions.
