Description

The 2018 (D) Block Island National Wildlife Refuge Quarter represents a Denver Mint issue from the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The Denver Mint struck 159,600,000 Block Island quarters dated 2018. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts a black-crowned night-heron in flight over Cow Cove. Block Island protects critical coastal habitat recognized by The Nature Conservancy as one of the "Last Great Places" in the Western Hemisphere. Pictured Rocks (MI), Apostle Islands (WI), Voyageurs (MN), Cumberland Island (GA), and Block Island (RI) were featured. The program continued with strong collector support nearing its conclusion. The Denver Mint, which grew from an 1860s gold rush assay office, has served as a major production facility since 1906. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $1 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #669489.
