Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2017-P 1-cent WDDR-001, this Lincoln Shield Cent variety presents moderate extra thickness on two sets of designer's initials on the reverse: LB (Lyndall Bass, who designed the Union Shield reverse introduced in 2010) and JFM (Joseph F. Menna, the sculptor who engraved the design). The simultaneous involvement of both sets of initials indicates hub displacement affected the lower reverse field where these credits appear, broadening the fine letter strokes to a degree clearly visible at moderate magnification. The moderate intensity produces noticeably broadened strokes without fully separating into distinct primary and secondary impressions. No significant die markers have been documented on either obverse or reverse beyond the doubling itself. The 2017-P Lincoln Shield Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc composition, continuing Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait that has appeared on Lincoln Cents since 1909. Examine both the LB and JFM initials under 7x to 10x magnification, comparing the fine characters against an undoubled specimen to confirm the moderate extra thickness.
