2017 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-2017-02

Description

Second documented atypical die clash on the Lincoln Shield Cent series, this 2017 Philadelphia Mint example is cataloged by MadDieClashes. Unlike a normal die clash where opposing dies contact directly, an atypical die clash involves abnormal contact producing rotated or displaced impressions. The obverse shows parts of UNU and P from E PLURIBUS UNUM plus shield details transferred into the fields. On the reverse, light trails emanate north from incuse details of E PLURIBUS UNUM into the upper shield. A few degrees of rotation between dies when clashed explains the offset positioning. The catalog warns that collectors should take care when attributing and match clash marks with fixed landmarks — shield stripe position and Lincoln's nose — which differ from other clashed die pairs. This caution reflects the challenge of distinguishing one atypical die clash from another, since each pair produces a unique pattern depending on rotation, pressure, and contact area. As only the second atypical die clash on Shield Cents, this represents an early catalog entry for a series begun in 2010.
