2017 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-2017-01

Description

Cataloged as ADC-1c-2017P-01, this atypical die clash on a 2017 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent represents the strongest clash yet documented on the Shield Cent design. Atypical die clashes occur when the obverse and reverse dies make contact without a planchet between them in a misaligned or rotated position, transferring design elements into unexpected areas of the opposing die. While other Lincoln Shield Cent examples have shown portions of UNUM and E PLU clashed into the fields adjacent to Lincoln's portrait, this specimen is the first to exhibit extensive perimeter detail from the shield itself, along with the designer's initials LB and the N from ONE transferred behind Lincoln's head. Discovered by Lindsey Slentz and attributed by MadDieClashes, the variety also marks the first documented instance of clashed obverse details appearing in the fields around the shield on the reverse side. The depth and breadth of the transferred design make this an exceptional study piece for understanding how die contact geometry determines which elements transfer during a clash event.
