Description

WDDR-004 (reference: 2017-P 25c MO WDDR-004) documents a hub misalignment event on the 2017-P Ozark National Scenic Riverways Quarter in the America the Beautiful Quarters program. Ronald D. Sanders designed and Renata Gordon sculpted the Ozark Riverways reverse, which depicts Alley Mill at one of Missouri's spring-fed waters — a composition rich in textures including water ripples, tree branches, and the mill's stonework. Each of these design elements responds to hub doubling differently: water surface patterns produce shifted contour lines, foliage creates displaced leaf clusters, and the mill's straight edges generate conventional doubled outlines. The Philadelphia Mint struck these quarters on copper-nickel clad planchets at the standard weight of 5.67 grams and 24.26 mm diameter, feeding them into general circulation during 2017 as part of the ATB program's eighth year. With no additional cross-references beyond the Wexler designation known, WDDR-004 is in a DDR family for the Ozark design extending past WDDR-021. Collectors examining potential specimens should use 7x to 10x magnification with oblique lighting to isolate the specific displaced design elements characteristic of this particular working die.
