Description
The 2016 (P) Shawnee National Park 5 oz Silver Quarter is a quarter produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the 5 oz. America the Beautiful Silver Quarters 2010 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 105,000 examples, making this the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 58% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites β struck in 5 ounces of .999 fine silver at a massive 76.2mm diameter. The reverse depicts Camel Rock with native vegetation and a red-tailed hawk. Shawnee National Forest encompasses over 280,000 acres featuring dramatic sandstone bluffs and the unique Garden of the Gods wilderness area. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry.
