Description
The 2016 (P) Burnished Harpers Ferry National Park 5 oz Silver Quarter is a special strike quarter struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the 5 oz. America the Beautiful Silver Quarters 2010 to Date series. With a mintage of 18,896, this is a scarce issue — the higher-mintage of the two mint variants, representing 10% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites — struck in 5 ounces of .999 fine silver at a massive 76.2mm diameter. The reverse depicts John Brown's Fort, the armory fire engine house from his 1859 raid. Harpers Ferry sits at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers and witnessed pivotal events including the largest Civil War surrender of Federal troops. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Auction record: $330 SP70 12-23-2022 eBay. Struck in 99.9% silver, weighing 155.5 grams, 76.2 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #605351.
