2015 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-2015-02

Description

Second documented atypical die clash for the 2015 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, this variety appears stronger than the previously cataloged ADC-1c-2015(P)-01, with the first U in UNUM well defined within Lincoln's bow tie area on the obverse — a clear transfer from the reverse die's inscription. The bottom edge of the banner containing ONE CENT is also visible on the obverse, showing how the reverse design's central elements map onto the portrait side during a planchet-free clash. On the reverse, standard clash marks of the type seen in almost all Shield Cents are present, reflecting the design's geometry which tends to produce consistent clash patterns due to the relationship between the portrait's relief and the shield's flat surfaces. In the collection of Chris Freda. Cataloged in the MadDieClashes reference system. Struck in copper-plated zinc, the 2015 cent continued Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse introduced in 2010. The stronger impression compared to the -01 variety suggests either greater die-to-die contact force or a different stage of die wear that allowed more complete metal flow into the transferred design elements during the clash event.
