Description

The Wexler Team cataloged WDDR-003 on the 2015-D Saratoga National Historical Park quarter, the third doubled die reverse identified on this New York-themed installment of the America the Beautiful program. Designed by Frank Morris and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, the Saratoga reverse portrays a uniformed Revolutionary War soldier — Sergeant John Daniel Neilson — at the 1777 British surrender site, with a backdrop of artillery and landscape elements that provide complex topographical detail susceptible to hub doubling. Denver Mint production of ATB quarters was distributed across five different reverse designs each year, meaning the specific Saratoga dies saw only a fraction of the overall quarter production. The doubling characteristics unique to this WDDR number distinguish it from WDDR-001 and WDDR-002 on the same date and design. Collectors pursuing ATB doubled dies face a particular challenge: each of the 56 different reverses in the program constitutes a distinct collecting target, and hub doubling on a highly detailed scenic reverse like Saratoga can appear in the figure's uniform, the cannon, the fence rails, or the lettering.
