Description

The 2014 (S) Proof Everglades National Park Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The U.S. Mint produced 856,139 examples, making this ranked 9th of 25 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts an anhinga with outstretched wings and a roseate spoonbill. Everglades National Park protects the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States, critical habitat for the Florida panther and American crocodile. Great Smoky Mountains (TN), Shenandoah (VA), Arches (UT), Great Sand Dunes (CO), and Everglades (FL) were honored. Great Smoky Mountains, the most visited national park, drew broad collector interest. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $26 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #524156.
