Description

The 2014 (S) Great Sand Dunes National Park Quarter represents a San Francisco Mint issue from the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The U.S. Mint produced 1.2 million examples, making this the lowest mintage among 15 mint variants, representing only less than 1% of total production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts a father and son near a creek bed with sand dunes and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains behind. Great Sand Dunes contains the tallest sand dunes in North America, reaching heights of over 750 feet. Great Smoky Mountains (TN), Shenandoah (VA), Arches (UT), Great Sand Dunes (CO), and Everglades (FL) were honored. Great Smoky Mountains, the most visited national park, drew broad collector interest. San Francisco's storied mint, born of the California Gold Rush, has evolved into the primary producer of U.S. proof coins.
