2014 Typical Die Clash TDC-1C-2014-01

Description

Serving as the first documented 2014 die clash on Lincoln Shield Cents, this variety preserves the telltale signs of obverse and reverse dies striking each other without a planchet between them. When a cent blank fails to feed into the press, the dies make direct contact and transfer portions of their design into each other's fields. On the obverse, shield clash remnants from the reverse design appear in the fields adjacent to the front and back of Lincoln's portrait, while part of the letters UN from UNUM can be seen near the bow tie area, where the reverse inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM contacted the obverse die. The reverse shows slight clash marks on the shield where Lincoln's portrait pressed into the reverse die surface. Die clashes are among the most visually accessible error types for new collectors because the transferred design elements are often recognizable without magnification.
