Description
SKH-1c-2013-01 is a spiked head documented for the 2013 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent. A spiked head on a Shield Cent is a die crack: during high-speed production, a crack opens in the obverse die between the rim and Lincoln's bust. Metal fills the crack during striking, and subsequent coins struck from that cracked die display a raised spike projecting from Lincoln's head — from the forehead, crown, or back of the portrait depending on the path the crack takes. The 2013-P cent was produced at the Philadelphia Mint. As the founding entry for the 2013-P spiked head catalog, SKH-1c-2013-01 shows that obverse dies were cracking this way from at least the early portion of the year's production run. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins, this variety joins a growing registry of Shield Cent spiked heads that spans every year since the design's 2010 introduction.
