2013 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
Appearing on the 2013-P Great Basin National Park Quarter, DDR-003 shows light spread to the east on the lower right branches and leaves of the bristlecone pine tree — the ancient species that serves as the centerpiece of this America the Beautiful design. Bristlecone pines, among the oldest known living organisms on Earth with specimens exceeding four thousand years of age, were selected to represent Great Basin National Park in Nevada. Die markers include UVC-2215 and DMR-004. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B with both reverse and obverse at mid-die state; and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The organic forms of branches and leaves respond differently to hub doubling than architectural elements, often producing spread that appears as thickened or shadowed foliage rather than the clean separation lines seen on geometric designs. Collectors should examine the lower right portion of the tree's canopy under magnification, comparing branch widths to a known normal strike to detect the eastward displacement.
