2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-023
ErrorDescription
Hub doubling on this 2013 Philadelphia Mint Mount Rushmore National Park Quarter concentrates on the lower part of Thomas Jefferson's nose within the iconic four-president tableau. Two obverse stages are documented: Stage A shows a small die gouge inside the upper E in UNITED and a short die gouge left of the D in DOLLAR. Stage B finds those markers abraded away but introduces new ones — a die gouge SW of the ear, below the right arm of T in LIBERTY, left of the A in STATES, and in the upper opening of E in WE. Two reverse stages complement these: Stage A has no significant markers, while Stage B develops die gouges on Washington's nose, left of Jefferson's right eye, left of Jefferson's lower left eyelid, and above the hat of the suspended worker. The transition from Stage A to Stage B — where original markers are abraded and replaced by entirely new gouges — indicates die resurfacing between states, a maintenance step that removed early damage but could not prevent new fatigue from developing. Wexler Variety ID: 2013-P 25-cent SD WDDR-023.
