2013-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Premier DDR designation for the 2013-D America the Beautiful Quarter (South Dakota's Mount Rushmore issue), WDDR-001 was cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2013-D 25¢ SD WDDR-001. The doubling shows on the lower part of Thomas Jefferson's nose within the Mount Rushmore carving depicted on the reverse — a remarkably specific diagnostic location that leverages the fine sculptural detail of Gutzon Borglum's iconic monument as rendered on the coin's reverse die. Obverse die markers are extensive: a die gouge right of the top of the I in IN, two die gouges between the L and A in DOLLAR, a die gouge right of the top of the A in QUARTER, a die gouge above the left side of the R in LIBERTY, and a die gouge above the right side of the D in UNITED. No significant reverse markers were noted. The concentration of five distinct die gouges across the obverse provides an unusually robust set of die authentication points, making this one of the more readily confirmed varieties based on die markers alone. Nose-area doubling on the Jefferson carving within Mount Rushmore requires examination at sufficient magnification to resolve the sculptural detail — the nose's lower contour creates a curved reference line against which even subtle displacement produces a detectable secondary edge. As the premier DDR for this date-mint-state combination, WDDR-001 presumably represents the strongest or most significant doubled die reverse among all 2013-D South Dakota ATB Quarter varieties. The Mount Rushmore reverse design, featuring all four presidential faces carved into the granite cliff, provides multiple zones of fine facial detail where hub doubling could potentially manifest.
