Description

The 2012 (S) Acadia National Park Quarter is a quarter produced at the San Francisco Mint as part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The U.S. Mint produced 1.4 million examples, making this ranked 3rd of 16 mint variants by mintage, with less than 1% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse on the rugged granite coastline of Mount Desert Island. Acadia was the first national park established east of the Mississippi River and protects the highest rocky headlands along the Atlantic coast. El Yunque (PR), Chaco Culture (NM), Acadia (ME), Hawai'i Volcanoes (HI), and Denali (AK) were featured. El Yunque marked the first U.S. territory site in the program. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins.
