Description

Produced at the Denver Mint, the 2012 (D) Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarter is part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The Denver Mint struck 78,600,000 Hawaii Volcanoes quarters dated 2012. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse shows Kilauea erupting along its east rift. Inscriptions: HAWAI’I VOLCANOES, HAWAII, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encompasses two of the world's most active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. El Yunque (PR), Chaco Culture (NM), Acadia (ME), Hawai'i Volcanoes (HI), and Denali (AK) were featured. El Yunque marked the first U.S. territory site in the program. The Denver Mint, which grew from an 1860s gold rush assay office, has served as a major production facility since 1906.
