The 2012 (S) Proof Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 962,447 clad proof Hawaii Volcanoes quarters dated 2012. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse shows Kilauea erupting along its east rift. Inscriptions: HAWAI’I VOLCANOES, HAWAII, 2012 and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encompasses two of the world's most active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. El Yunque (PR), Chaco Culture (NM), Acadia (ME), Hawai'i Volcanoes (HI), and Denali (AK) were featured. El Yunque marked the first U.S. territory site in the program. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors.
