Description

Sharing the same Wexler catalog number as its Position A counterpart, this 2012 Presidential Dollar WDDR-002 was struck at the Philadelphia Mint with the Benjamin Harrison portrait in Position B — the inverted die orientation where edge lettering reads normally when the reverse faces up. Position A and Position B designations reflect the two possible orientations of the edge-incused lettering relative to the obverse and reverse dies, a feature unique to the Presidential Dollar series that creates distinct collectible variants from the same die pair. The doubled die reverse shows hub misalignment on Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse design, with visible doubling on design elements shared across the entire Presidential Dollar series. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2012-P $1 BH WDDR-002, no other attribution system references have been established. Struck in manganese brass clad composition (outer layers of 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, 4% nickel bonded to a pure copper core) at 8.1 grams on 26.5mm planchets, the 2012 Benjamin Harrison dollar was produced exclusively for numismatic sales after the Treasury Department ended circulation production of Presidential Dollars in December 2011 due to a surplus of over $1.4 billion in stored dollar coins.
