2012 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-2012-01
Error
Description
Documented by MadDieClashes as ADC-1C-2012-01, this atypical die clash is the first cataloged non-standard clash variety on the 2012 (P) Lincoln Shield cent. Atypical die clashes occur when the obverse and reverse dies contact each other without a planchet present, but at an abnormal angle, rotation, or offset relative to their standard alignment — producing transferred design impressions that appear in positions that would be impossible under normal die orientation. This mechanism distinguishes atypical clashes from typical clashes, where the dies meet in their standard aligned configuration and produce predictably positioned transfer marks. On the Lincoln Shield cent, an atypical clash could deposit traces of Lyndall Bass's Union Shield design onto the obverse in rotated positions around V.D. Brenner's Lincoln portrait, or project Lincoln's profile elements onto the reverse at angles inconsistent with the normal obverse-reverse spatial relationship. Philadelphia struck approximately 3.13 billion Shield cents in 2012, and the high production volume increases the statistical probability of press malfunctions that could produce abnormal die contact events. The "01" designation establishes this as the earliest documented atypical clash for the 2012 date, with ADC-1C-2012-02 representing a second independent occurrence. Atypical clashes are prized by specialized die variety collectors because their unusual geometry requires analytical interpretation — the collector must mentally reconstruct the angle and rotation of the die contact to understand why the transferred design elements appear where they do. Examination requires oblique fiber-optic illumination at 10-20x magnification, with the coin rotated through multiple angles to reveal the transferred design traces. The key diagnostic signature of an atypical clash is the presence of transferred design elements in positions that cannot be explained by standard die alignment, indicating the dies were misoriented when they contacted each other.
