Description

The 2012 (P) El Yunque National Park Quarter, struck at the Philadelphia Mint, is part of the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 collection. The U.S. Mint produced 25.8 million examples, making this ranked 12th of 16 mint variants by mintage, with 4% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts a Coqui tree frog on a leaf with a Puerto Rican parrot behind an epiphyte plant. El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest System and is home to numerous endemic species found nowhere else on Earth. El Yunque (PR), Chaco Culture (NM), Acadia (ME), Hawai'i Volcanoes (HI), and Denali (AK) were featured. El Yunque marked the first U.S. territory site in the program. Coined at the Philadelphia facility, the nation's original mint that has operated continuously since its 1792 founding. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $3 depending on grade and condition.
