The 2012 (P) Burnished Acadia National Park 5 oz Silver Quarter is a special strike quarter struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the 5 oz. America the Beautiful Silver Quarters 2010 to Date series. With a mintage of 14,978, this is a scarce issue — ranked 2nd of 5 mint variants by mintage, with 19% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites — struck in 5 ounces of .999 fine silver at a massive 76.2mm diameter. The reverse depicts Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse on the rugged granite coastline of Mount Desert Island. Acadia was the first national park established east of the Mississippi River and protects the highest rocky headlands along the Atlantic coast. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry.
