Description

The 2012 (P) Burnished Hawaii Volcanoes National Park 5 oz Silver Quarter is a special strike quarter struck at the Philadelphia Mint, part of the 5 oz. America the Beautiful Silver Quarters 2010 to Date series. With a mintage of 14,863, this is a scarce issue β€” the lowest mintage among 5 mint variants, representing only 19% of total production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites β€” struck in 5 ounces of .999 fine silver at a massive 76.2mm diameter. The reverse depicts a dramatic eruption on the east rift zone of Kilauea Volcano. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park encompasses two of the world's most active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. Struck at the original U.S. Mint facility, in continuous operation since 1792. Auction record: $1,002 SP70 12-14-2014 Great Collections. Struck in 99.9% silver, weighing 155.5 grams, 76.2 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #510276.
