Description

Doubling on the back of the Dall sheep's neck is the identifying feature of WDDR-001 on the 2012 (P) Denali National Park quarter, catalogued by the Wexler Team. Wexler Variety ID: 2012-P 25¢ AK WDDR-001. Obverse Stage A die markers: a die gouge in the field to the left of the forehead; die scratches in the field between the forehead and the motto IN. Reverse Stage A die markers: a die gouge below the middle of the Dall sheep's horn. The Denali quarter depicts the great mountain and Alaska's iconic Dall sheep on the reverse as part of the America the Beautiful series. WDDR-001 is the first documented doubled die reverse for this issue. The dual positioning of the obverse forehead gouge and the reverse horn gouge below the Dall sheep creates a complementary set of Stage A diagnostics, and the doubling on the sheep's neck aligns directly with one of the most visually prominent design elements on the Denali reverse. Die crack through the designer's initials JF. Reverse Stage B: Die chips on the leftmost peak.
