Description

The 2012 (D) Presidential Dollar - Chester A. Arthur, Position B was struck at the Denver Mint as a dollar in the Presidential Dollars 2007 to Date series. The U.S. Mint's figure of 4.1 million covers every 2012-D Chester A. Arthur dollar, whichever way the edge lettering ran; how many are Position B coins is not recorded. The obverse features rotating portraits of each U.S. president in order of service, released four per year and the reverse displays the Statue of Liberty. The twenty-first President (1881–1885), Chester A. Arthur assumed office after Garfield's assassination and surprised critics by championing the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act of 1883, which established merit-based government employment. Arthur, Cleveland (first term), Benjamin Harrison, and Cleveland (second term) were issued. Production shifted to collector-only, ending circulation strikes. Cleveland is the only president with two Presidential dollars, one for each of his nonconsecutive terms. Coined at Denver's facility, which transitioned from processing Colorado gold rush metal to full-scale coin production in 1906. Struck in 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #512054.
