Description

The 2012 (D) Presidential Dollar - Chester A. Arthur, Position B is a dollar produced at the Denver Mint as part of the Presidential Dollars 2007 to Date series. The U.S. Mint produced 4.1 million examples, making this ranked 3rd of 16 mint variants by mintage, with 5% of production. The obverse features rotating portraits of each U.S. president in order of service, released four per year and the reverse displays the Statue of Liberty. The twenty-first President (1881–1885), Chester A. Arthur assumed office after Garfield's assassination and surprised critics by championing the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act of 1883, which established merit-based government employment. Arthur, Cleveland (first term), Benjamin Harrison, and Cleveland (second term) were issued. Production shifted to collector-only, ending circulation strikes. Cleveland is the only president to appear on two coins. Struck at the Denver Mint, established in 1906 from an earlier assay office that processed Colorado gold rush metal. Estimated market value ranges from $1 to $6 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 77% copper, 12% zinc, 1% other over a pure copper core, weighing 8.1 grams, 26.5 mm in diameter, with a lettered edge. Cataloged as PCGS #512054.
