Description

A quarter from the Philadelphia Mint, the 2011 (P) Vicksburg National Military Park Quarter belongs to the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The Philadelphia Mint struck 30,800,000 Vicksburg quarters dated 2011. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts the ironclad gunboat USS Cairo on the Yazoo River. Vicksburg National Military Park commemorates the pivotal 1863 siege that gave the Union control of the Mississippi River, splitting the Confederacy in two. Gettysburg (PA), Glacier (MT), Olympic (WA), Vicksburg (MS), and Chickasaw (OK) were released. The Gettysburg and Vicksburg quarters resonated with Civil War history collectors. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $1 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #505147.
