Description

The 2011 (D) Chickasaw National Recreation Area Quarter is a quarter minted at the Denver Mint, within the America the Beautiful Quarters 2010-2021 series. The Denver Mint struck 69,400,000 Chickasaw quarters dated 2011. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs featuring national parks and sites from each state and territory. The reverse depicts the Lincoln Bridge spanning Travertine Creek. Chickasaw National Recreation Area protects freshwater and mineral springs that have held cultural significance for centuries, originally established as the Sulphur Springs Reservation in 1902. Gettysburg (PA), Glacier (MT), Olympic (WA), Vicksburg (MS), and Chickasaw (OK) were released. The Gettysburg and Vicksburg quarters resonated with Civil War history collectors. Denver's mint evolved from a frontier assay office into one of the nation's primary coin production facilities, opening in 1906.
