Description

Documented at Stage B in its die life progression, this second cud for the 2010 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent captures a die break that developed after the die had already seen measurable use. The Stage B designation indicates the die had advanced past its initial early die state when the rim fracture occurred, suggesting accumulated striking stress contributed to the failure. A cud forms when a piece of the die rim breaks away entirely, and the cavity left behind fills with planchet metal during subsequent strikes to produce a raised featureless area at the coin's edge. The 2010-P Lincoln Shield Cent is historically significant as the inaugural year of Lyndall Bass's union shield reverse — the permanent design that replaced the four rotating Bicentennial reverses of 2009 and Frank Gasparro's beloved Memorial reverse that preceded them.
