Description

Inaugural year of Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse design, the 2010 Lincoln Shield Cent marked a major transition in cent production — and CU-1c-2010-01 records the first documented cud on this new design era. Philadelphia struck 1,963,630,000 Shield cents in 2010, the first year the shield reverse replaced the four rotating 2009 Bicentennial designs that had temporarily succeeded the long-running Lincoln Memorial reverse. Cataloged on April 24, 2019 by Cuds on Coins with no additional cross-reference, this cud documents a rim break where a piece of the die separated completely, leaving the characteristic raised featureless area on struck coins. The Shield reverse design, with its prominent union shield, banner reading ONE CENT, and thirteen vertical stripes, creates a visual context for cud location that differs significantly from the columned Memorial building or the Wheat Ears that preceded it.
