2009 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2009-P $1 SF JT WDDR-002, this Presidential Dollar shares the same Wexler variety identification as a companion entry in the database, both documenting the doubling on the right arm of the Statue of Liberty just above the sleeve of the robe on the common reverse used across the entire Presidential Dollar series. Obverse die markers include light die scratches running SW to NE in the field to the left of the upper head, a short die scratch from SW to NE to the right of the chin, and a short die scratch from NW to SE to the right of the nose. The reverse carries a die crack running across the top of the lower three fingers on the left hand. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2009-P $1 SF JT WDDR-002. The Presidential Dollar program (2007-2016) honored U.S. presidents in order of service, with four issues per year bearing different obverse portraits but sharing Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty common reverse. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in manganese brass composition — 88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, and 2% nickel — each coin weighs 8.1 grams with a 26.5 mm diameter and smooth edge bearing incuse inscriptions. The reverse die crack across the lower fingers of the Statue of Liberty's left hand documents progressive structural failure in a high-detail area where the fine finger detail created stress concentrations in the die steel. The arm doubling above the sleeve occurs at the junction between the draped robe and the exposed arm, where the transition in surface texture from fabric folds to smooth skin creates distinct edge lines that clearly reveal hub displacement.
