Description

Carrying the identical reverse doubling as the Position A entry — at the intersection of the second clockwise ray and the right arm of the Statue of Liberty — this Position B variant of WDDR-006 differs only in edge lettering orientation. Presidential Dollars received their edge inscriptions in a separate post-strike operation, where coins were fed through an edge-lettering machine that impressed the date, mint mark, and mottoes into the coin's edge. Depending on which face entered the machine first, the resulting text reads either normally relative to the obverse (Position A) or inverted (Position B). Because the edge lettering step occurs after striking, the same obverse and reverse die pair produces both positions — identical face designs with different edge orientations. The same diagnostic die markers apply: strong gouge south of the R in PRESIDENT, small gouge northwest of 2 in 1825, and scratches through IDENT. This mechanical distinction makes Position A and B separate collectible varieties despite sharing every struck design element. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2008-P $1 JQA WDDR-006.
